SMTP to OAuth Migration

Overview

As per Google’s recent policy update, all users using CalDAV, CardDAV, IMAP, SMTP and POP which are considered as a less secure medium for authentication, have to be migrated to OAuth for better security. To ensure a smooth migration, we will use this document for all communication moving forward.

Why the Transition?

Previously, users only had the option to configure SMTP-based authentication for sending emails. According to Google’s policy, SMTP-based authentication is considered insecure and unreliable. Consequently, Google has advised all third-party apps to provide a more secure OAuth-based authorization option.

What You Need to Do

All Google domain customers currently using SMTP configuration are requested to migrate to OAuth authentication. This migration needs to be completed before 30th September. After this date, access for SMTP-based configurations will be automatically blocked.

How to Migrate to OAuth

Users can migrate to OAuth authentication by following the below steps:

  1. Click on the “Sign-in with Google” hyperlinked text. If you already have configured SMTP for your Google domain IDs, you will have to first remove that configuration and then click on “Sign-in with Google”. For new setup, use OAuth Authorisation. If you have already set up your SMTP configuration then click OAuth > Complete the Authorisation request.

  3. Complete the authentication process and once completed, you will receive a confirmation email on the email you have configured.

  4. OAuth option is available to all users using gmail or Google Suite based email IDs for configuring their automated email settings.

    Note:

    > This is not for other email ID domains, they will continue to work as it has been.

Benefits of OAuth

  • Enhanced Security: OAuth provides a more secure method for authentication, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.

  • Reliability: OAuth ensures a more stable and reliable connection for sending emails through automated workflows.
