How to Zip a File

Compressed or “zipped” files are denoted by the .zip file extension. Because they consume less storage space than normal files, zipped files simplify and speed up the upload and download processes.

How to zip on Microsoft Windows XP or later

  1. Locate the files or folders in Windows Explorer.
  2. Select the files or folders you wish to zip. Press and hold the CTRL key to select multiple files or folders simultaneously.
  3. Right-click the selected items and choose the Send to option.
  4. Click Compressed (zipped) folder. When compression is complete, the .zip file will appear.
  5. Title the newly created .zip file. By default, the .zip file will be named after the last file or folder you selected.
  6. Upload the zipped folder.

How to zip on Mac OS X

  1. Locate the desired files or folders in Finder.
  2. Select the files or folder you wish to zip.
  3. Press and hold the Command key to select multiple items consecutively.
  4. Right-click, or Control + Click, the selected items
  5. Choose Compress “filename” in the menu. When selecting multiple files, the option will read Compress # Items. When compression is complete, the .zip file will appear. The newly created .zip file will be named after the last file chosen. If multiple files or folders were zipped, the file will be named Archive.zip by default.
